The chemical industry of producing chlorine and caustic soda by electrolysis of saturated salt (NaCl) aqueous solution is called chlor alkali industry. Chlor alkali industry is one of the most basic chemical industries. At present, there are three main processes: diaphragm, ion-exchange membrane and mercury electrolysis.

Basic reaction principle:

Anodizing reaction 2Clˉ → Cl2↑ + 2e；

Cathodic reduction reaction 2H2O + 2e → H2↑ + 2OHˉ，Na⁺ +OHˉ → NaOH

Total reaction 2NaCl + 2H2O → 2NaOH + Cl2↑ + H2↑

Application of titanium electrode:

Carbon anode was used in chlor alkali industry, then artificial graphite anodewas used. At the end of 1960s, the invention and wide application of titanium based insoluble DSA electrode made a breakthrough in chlor alkali industry. Polycrystalline platinum group metal oxide coated titanium electrodes, such as Ruti, rusnti, ruirti, have been widely used.
